Dukas’s Little-Known Masterpiece, *Ariane et Barbe-Bleue* This July, the Paris National Opera will finally make its first visit to Japan to perform *Ariane et Barbe-Bleue*. One of the highlights of their visit is, of course, the appearance of dramatic soprano Deborah Polaski, who will sing the role of “Ariane.” While this opera shares the same source story, it’s interesting to note that—perhaps because the librettist is different—it has a slightly different feel compared to Bartók’s well-known *Bluebeard*. Compared to Bartók’s work—which is infinitely mysterious in both its music and narrative—this production is clear and substantial, with a French-style elegance that carries a faint hint of Wagner.
