One of today’s leading countertenors, who says he wants to dispel the prejudice that “music written in the 18th century is old-fashioned and steeped in pomposity,” set his sights on Johann Adolf Hasse—a composer who had been overshadowed by the fame of Handel and Vivaldi and whose very name had nearly been forgotten. In addition to some 120 operas, Hasse composed oratorios, cantatas, masses, and numerous instrumental works. At one point, he was poised to be hailed as “Handel’s rival,” but he is also known for having declined that title himself. Although he was highly regarded and popular during his lifetime, like many composers of that era, he was eventually forgotten as time passed. Now, more than 300 years later, Barna-Sabadus has stepped forward to breathe new life into Hasse’s works. His endeavor has been brilliantly realized here, thanks to superb technical skill, powerful voices, and the magnificent orchestration by the ever-reliable Hofstetter. Naxos Japan
