Description:
In a typical string quartet, one of the joys is savoring the sound of each individual instrument, but when all the instruments are the same, there’s no doubt that the experience offers a different kind of pleasure. This viola ensemble consists of four members of the Munich Symphony Orchestra. Of course, it would be unreasonable to expect a standard repertoire; only two pieces—Weintour and York Bowen—could be performed in their original form (since Piazzolla’s work was originally written for string quartet, it required only a slight arrangement). The remaining pieces are “adaptations” that explore new possibilities. How delightful these works by Telemann and Bartók are! This is an album brimming with vitality, as if the sheer joy of performing is being conveyed directly to the listener. Naxos Japan
