Description:
Composed by Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) in 1888, this Symphony No. 5 is known as one of his most popular symphonies, rivaling Symphony No. 6 in popularity. After composing his Symphony No. 4 in 1877, Tchaikovsky did not compose any more symphonies, with the exception of the unnumbered “Manfred Symphony.” Although the exact reason is unclear, it is speculated that he may have been experiencing a temporary creative slump. However, after embarking on a concert tour of Europe in 1886, where he interacted with local musicians such as Mahler, R. Strauss, and Grieg, Tchaikovsky’s creative drive was reignited, and he composed this Fifth Symphony in one go. Although it did not receive particularly favorable reviews at its premiere, there is no doubt that its rich lyricism, charming waltzes, and the “from tragedy to triumph” narrative were warmly received by audiences. During a performance, the conductor’s skill is truly put to the test in how effectively they create contrast and dynamic tension between each movement. Of course, Poppen skillfully and elegantly builds the momentum of the piece, leading the audience to a deeply moving climax. The “Slavonic March” also brings the house down.
