Skrowaczewski began practicing the piano at the age of four, but by the age of seven he had already composed his first work, an “Overture,” in the Classical style with a two-pipe orchestration—just like Mozart. Although he had aspired to become a pianist, he suffered a hand injury during German bombing raids in World War II. He began studying in earnest under the renowned teacher Nadia Boulanger in Paris in 1947, which led him to pursue composition in earnest. Thereafter, while continuing his career as a conductor, he also composed enthusiastically, creating 15 orchestral works—including concertos—and four chamber music pieces. Among these, his “Concerto for Orchestra” left a profound impression on audiences when he conducted it himself during guest appearances with the NHK Symphony Orchestra and the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra. This disc features an all-Skrzypowski program, performed and conducted by the composer himself, and centers on orchestral works, including his early masterpiece “Music at Night” (1977 revised edition), which received its Japanese premiere last year with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra. This album serves as a reminder that Skrowaczewski is not only an outstanding conductor but also a brilliant composer. [Comment provided by BMG Japan]
