Benjamin Schmidt has recently been making a remarkable name for himself in the world of jazz. This album features violin concertos by three great Polish composers. Wieniawski’s Concerto No. 2 is one of the composer’s most famous works—a masterpiece with many highlights, including a solemn first movement, a dreamlike second movement, and a passionate final movement. His performance is incredibly cool. Of course, he hits all the right notes in the melodic passages, but overall, the performance is crisp and refreshing, without any cloying heaviness. Listen to his masterful handling of the dizzying passages in the final movement. Szymanowski’s Violin Concerto No. 2 was composed during the composer’s final years. While it stands out for its boldness in every aspect—from timbre to rhythm—Schmidt conquers this piece with evident delight. And then there’s Lutosławski.
