Leopold Koželuf: Piano Concertos Nos. 1, 4, and 5 By the 1780s, during Mozart’s later years, Leopold Koželuh had gained a reputation and popularity that surpassed even Mozart’s. In 1791, he was appointed Court Composer in Vienna, succeeding Mozart, and composed numerous works, primarily for the piano. He composed 23 piano concertos, 55 piano sonatas, and 65 piano trios. However, as Beethoven and others rose to fame, he gradually faded into obscurity. The works included here are among his earliest compositions; in 2002, Tamas Dratova serendipitously discovered the original scores for three of them. He edited them in collaboration with musicologist Vladimir Godard, and they were performed and recorded in December 2004. The cadenzas were composed by Tamás Drátová. Now, for those of you who are feeling a bit tired of Mozart lately… this is music I highly recommend. The melodic lines make you wonder for a moment, “Is this Mozart?” and there are fleeting glimpses of a sophisticated sound. The musical flow remains entirely natural, and the lively passages are a delight to the ear.
