Launched in parallel with “Mozart from Salzburg,” a recording series of Mozart symphonies by the tradition-rich Salzburg Mozarteum Orchestra, this is the second installment in the Bruckner This album marks the second installment in the cycle, following “No. 5,” and features Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 with Ivor Bolton, who assumed the role of chief conductor in the 2004 season. While launching a Bruckner cycle immediately after their signature Mozart repertoire may seem unexpected, this is part of a cycle that Bolton—upon assuming the role of principal conductor—ambitiously initiated in the orchestra’s regular concert series. Drawing on his experience in Baroque performance (he has also guest-conducted ensembles such as the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, among others), Bolton has incorporated the achievements of period instrument performance into his work. Highly acclaimed for his exceptionally clear, lucid, and tightly focused modern interpretations, this recording showcases his interpretation of Bruckner—one that leverages the functionality and instrumentation of the Mozarteum Orchestra to present a fresh perspective on the composer’s music.
