The fourth album by Achim Fiedler & the Lucerne Festival String Ensemble is a collection of works by Shostakovich. The pieces included here represent the polar opposites of Shostakovich’s oeuvre. Although the concerto is an early work from 1933, it is an innovative piece that fuses with Western European music, weaving together melancholy, parody, sorrow, farce, and Baroque elements. Shostakovich himself remarked, “I wanted to compose a piece not for sophisticated listeners, but simply for the sake of enjoyable music.” In contrast, String Quartet No. 8 was written in just three days while he was traveling in Switzerland in 1960—the year he was compelled to join the Communist Party—and is dedicated to “the victims of fascism and war.” It is a deeply autobiographical work that quotes his own compositions and recounts his life’s struggles under the weight of political power and war. Here, Baumgartner performs an arrangement of String Quartet No. 8. Regarding this arrangement, Baumgartner himself remarked, “For this ensemble, I added a double bass part and wanted to reproduce the original string quartet as faithfully as possible. However, while it may have seemed easy, it proved to be extremely difficult. Simply transposing the octaves would have turned it into a completely different piece. The greatness of this work is extraordinary, and I truly felt the significance of this arrangement.” Pianist Gremzer was born in Germany in 1962. According to the program, he has won prizes in more than 17 international competitions. He is a self-made man. Acclaimed by many critics, he has appeared at major music festivals around the world. He possesses a wide-ranging repertoire, excels at technically demanding works, and has made numerous recordings for Naxos. In June 2003, he was awarded the Cross of Merit—the highest honor bestowed by the President of the Federal Republic of Germany. His performances unfold with magnificent intensity and passion, underpinned by clearly analyzed technique. Now, R. Friedrich is the virtuoso who has become the very “face” of the reborn Lucerne Festival Orchestra. With him serving as soloist, expectations are bound to soar.
