Skrowaczewski / Bruckner: Romantic This is one of the recordings in the Bruckner Complete Symphonies Project and marks Skrowaczewski’s second recording of these works. The recording took place from October 25 to 28, 1998, with the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra. Since his previous recording was made with the Halle Orchestra in the early 1990s, this represents a re-recording made within a relatively short period of time. In fact, while the playing times (excluding the first movement) and minor changes in detail are quite similar, the orchestra’s sound quality and Skrowaczewski’s characteristic, solid approach—which has become his hallmark in recent years—seem to work exceptionally well for this work, resulting in a performance that feels deeply fulfilling right from the opening. The first movement, which is over a minute longer here, is, as expected, superb; it’s truly impressive how Skrowaczewski’s signature style—which seems to anticipate the listener’s every need (!?) and is always full of dramatic effect—is presented with strong concentration within a measured tempo. This attention to detail is a testament to Skrowaczewski’s mastery. In addition to borrowing sonic ideas from the revised edition in the first and fourth movements, the subtle sonic refinements found throughout the recording can be considered entirely natural when viewed in the context of the German tradition. That said, what is most impressive of all is the eloquence of those details; it is no exaggeration to say that no other performance has portrayed the “dialogic progression” of the first movement with such clarity and precision.
