The Lost Generation—Stefan, Butterworth, Coles The Horenstein Ensemble The “Horenstein Ensemble” was named in honor of the great conductor Jascha Horenstein, reflecting the ensemble’s affinity not only for his musicality but also for his character and outlook on life. Comprising core members—two violins, a viola, a cello, a flute, a harp, and a clarinet—all former members of the Berlin State Orchestra, the ensemble adapts to a wide-ranging repertoire through flexible combinations, enhanced by specific pieces and guest artists. Under the title “The Lost Generation,” this program features three composers who died in World War I: Rudy Stefan [1887–1915], one of the heirs to German musical tradition who bridged the post-Romantic and modern eras; George Butterworth [1885–1916], who devoted himself to collecting English folk songs and dances but died before his artistry had fully matured; and Cecil Coles [1888–1918], a Scottish composer who was a close friend of Holst. This is an ambitious album featuring works that are rarely heard today. Both Butterworth’s and Coles’s compositions are beautiful pieces imbued with a sense of melancholy.
