Gabriel Feltz’s Third Mahler Release! Symphony No. 5: A Statement in the Year of Mahler Following his highly subjective and deeply personal interpretations of Symphonies Nos. 7 and 6, Feltz has once again recorded a live performance of Mahler’s mid-period masterpiece, Symphony No. 5, with meticulous attention to detail. According to the liner notes (with a Japanese translation), Feltz meticulously examined the annotations (made by Mahler himself) in the scores used for the premiere and subsequent performances, paying the utmost attention to dynamics and accents. The first movement is taken at a slightly slower tempo, allowing the strings to sing richly and creating a clear contrast with the second movement that follows. The orchestral treatment of the complex counterpoint in the crucial third movement, the Scherzo, is masterful; the Ländler rhythm that appears midway through is persistently, almost seductively lingering, making one wonder if this is indeed the decadent atmosphere of fin-de-siècle Vienna. And the Adagietto is filled with a sweet, languid atmosphere brimming with deep emotion—so much so that one suspects this was the aspect on which Feltz focused most intently. An Adagietto this dreamy and supple has been a rarity in recent years. It feels just like something from the Mantovani or Henry Mancini orchestras. The finale of the last movement, though feeling a bit contrived, fits perfectly with Feltz’s slightly calculated artistic style—it may lack depth, but it certainly builds to a climax.
