HYDROPLANE, an atmospheric pop trio formed by three members of Melbourne, Australia's famous indie-pop band THE CAT'S MIAOW, has finally released a new album after more than 20 years of silence since 2001's "THE SOUND OF CHANGING PLACES". After more than 20 years of silence since 2001's THE SOUND OF CHANGING PLACES, the trio finally releases their new album! ANDREW WITHYCOMBE, KERRIE BOLTON, and BART CUMMINGS have come together again to bring that delicate and intimate sound world back to the present day. Recorded in Melbourne and Ballarat in 2024, the nine tracks on this album build on the lineage that began with the 1998 single "FAILED ADVENTURE" and continued through 2001's THE SOUND OF CHANGING PLACES, and show a further maturation. MIAOW, but also has its own unique sound that is in the vein of EMPRESS, THE AH CLUB, YOUNG MARBLE GIANTS, VERONIQUE VINCENT, and more.The minimalist ticking of the drum machine reminds me of ROBIN GIBB's "ROBIN'S REIGN" at some moments. The transparent voice of KERRIE BOLTON is accompanied by guitars, keyboards, drum machines, and loops that create an organic and floating sound, giving the impression of a flock of abstract clouds floating in the same sky. The title "To the Lighthouse" is not a direct quote from VIRGINIA WOOLF's novel, but it is a title that symbolizes the band's sense of style. Themes such as "human cruelty," "flight," "space travel," "adventurous spirit," and "spiritualism" are woven into the ambiguous, dreamlike pop songs, echoing nostalgia and uncertainty. As with THE CAT'S MIAOW, HYDROPLANE's consistent themes of "ambiguity" and "lingering sentimentality" are still present. The result is beautiful bedroom pop that is understated, serene, and backed by solid craftsmanship. A long-awaited reimagining of what can truly be called "dream work," this is a worthy celebration of HYDROPLANE's return.
