Arthur Russell—a prodigious talent who passed away far too soon—immersed himself in New York’s disco scene, creating numerous dance classics while also using the cello to produce works that anticipated minimal and ambient music. This release is a reissue of his career anthology, originally released posthumously by Philip Glass’s Point Music. Although it comprehensively covers his signature tracks, it had long been out of print, making this a long-awaited reissue. Naturally, it features the latest remastering. Retaining the dynamic energy of house and disco while limiting the number of sounds to the absolute minimum and expanding the soundscape with a remarkable sense of space, this music remains remarkably ahead of its time even when listened to today. This reissue is sure to spark yet another wave of “re-re-evaluation.”
