Arranged by Wolfgang Lenz, this piece showcases the virtuosity of each section’s musicians. “The Pictures at an Exhibition” begins with a fanfare for clarinet. Ensemble Berlin performs “Le Tombeau de Couperin” and “The Pictures at an Exhibition.” The arrangements tailored to this ensemble’s instrumentation were created by Wolfgang Lenz, oboist with the Augsburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Drawing on his many years of experience as a performer, he arranged these works specifically for Ensemble Berlin. He has also arranged works such as Schubert’s song cycles and Schumann’s piano pieces for various other instrumental combinations. A key feature of “Le Tombeau de Couperin” is that it includes the “Fugue” and “Toccata” movements, which were omitted from Ravel’s own orchestral arrangement. The timbres of each instrument and the transitions between parts are superb; in the rapid Toccata, the articulation of every single note played by each instrument is exceptionally clear, and those studying this piece on the piano may discover new facets of the composition. In *Pictures at an Exhibition*, the famous fanfare from the opening “Promenade” is introduced by the clarinet. The subsequent pieces also showcase the ingenuity of the instrumentation; unlike Ravel’s large-scale arrangement, this version allows listeners to enjoy the chord progressions and the atmosphere of the pieces in an intimate setting. It is such an intriguing work that it might be more accurately described as chamber music rather than orchestral music.
