They rose to prominence toward the end of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) era, and their first two albums, *Welcome to Hell* (1981) and *Black Metal* (1982), are considered to have had a major influence on thrash metal and extreme metal in general. The second album, in particular, was so influential that its title was adopted as the name of the extreme metal subgenre "black metal." They are cited as a major influence by bands such as Metallica, Behemoth, Celtic Frost, and Mayhem, and are one of the most revered bands representing their generation.
