Years after establishing his credentials as a hip-hop and neo-soul producer, Waajeed jumped headfirst into house music during the 2010s, launching the magnificent Dirt Tech Reck label (with ties to Underground Resistance) and releasing music on Sound Signature and Planet E. His installment of the Detroit Love series is a swift, nearly seamless mix of mostly exclusive cuts from Detroit and beyond. The selections generally stick to a steady tempo and warm vibes, and they all get two to four minutes of air time before moving on, so nothing lingers for too long, but there also arent any dramatic shifts between tracks. Even though this isnt a peaks-and-valleys mix, several tracks add some variation and keep things lively, such as a few gospel-inflected tracks near the beginning, or the self-explanatory Jackin Jazzy by Doc Link. Tracks by Roddy Rod and Matthew Law break the beats up a little, and later on in the mix, Ladymonix and DJ Rimarkable add a bit of sass and flair. Carl Craigs ambitious Detroit Love, Vol. 2 might have demonstrated the breadth and diversity of the Detroit dance scene more, but Waajeeds mix is more consistent, and the most enjoyable entry of the series so far. ~ Paul Simpson
