Their hits from the 70's such as "Cosmic Fantasy" and "September" and the iconic 80's dance tune "Let's Groove" made them popular worldwide, and more than half a century after their formation, the band is still going strong with Philip Bailey, Verdin White, Ralph Johnson (vo/perc), and the band continues to perform energetically live.The band's funky sound, twin vocals by Maurice White and Philip Bailey, and a gorgeous horn-featured sound were their main characteristics, but in the late 1990s, Maurice White, who had been the bandleader, devoted himself to producing and virtually retired from stage activities. However, the lineup and style of the band has changed over its long history, with band leader Maurice White effectively retiring from stage activities in the late 1990s to concentrate on producing, and the band members changing several times. In 2005, EW&F released their 19th studio album, "ILLUMINATION. This album, which reached the Top 40 in the U.S. and the Top 10 on the R&B album chart, was a collaboration between the members of EW&F and young musicians who were at the forefront of the R&B scene at the time. Participating in the album are OUTKAST's Big Boi, Kenny G, Kelly Rowland, will.i.am, Brian McKnight, and Raphael Sadiq. Producers also include names such as Jam & Lewis and Organized Noise. All of these artists are from the generation that grew up listening to EW&F.The album, which includes a song that is a "master-disciple" collaboration, was highly praised by the British and American media as "a fusion of modern beats and retro soul with horns in the background" and "the work of a great all-star team". The song "Show Me The Way (feat. Raphael Saadiq)" was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of "Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group.
