The Drifters, a leading R&B vocal group on Atlantic Records, are also known for having Ben E. King as a member. Formed in 1953, they went through several lineup changes—from founding lead vocalist Clyde McFatter to Johnny Moore in 1957, then Ben E. King in 1959, and Rudy Lewis in 1961. Throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, they released hit after hit and became widely recognized as leading figures in doo-wop. This two-CD set, “The Masters Series,” is the definitive best-of collection featuring the Drifters’ hits, signature songs, and timeless classics—a group whose name appears in both the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The 28-track collection includes not only the massive hit “Save the Last Dance for Me”—a song well-known in Japan that spent three consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart in 1960—but also “There Goes My Baby,” which topped the R&B singles chart, “Under the Boardwalk,” as well as “On Broadway” and “This Magic Moment”—it’s packed with doo-wop standards that are indispensable to any discussion of the group! It also includes key 1950s tracks like “Ruby Baby,” “Drip Drop,” and “Fools Fall in Love,” as well as the standard “Quando Quando Quando” and “Sweets for My Sweets,” which was later covered by The Searchers.
