ASTRE: A little-known progressive rock band formed in the late 1970s in Tulsa, Oklahoma, that performed regularly across the U.S. but disbanded in 1984. Their sole album from 1981, originally released on the local label Akustic Records, was first released on CD in early 2026 by Paisley Press in Germany! The album’s sound can be described as a patchwork of influences from ELP and King Crimson; within the raw, tense atmosphere created by tight drumming, the keyboard and guitar take turns taking the lead as the songs unfold, creating an instrumental-oriented work. The guitarist and bassist each also played keyboards, enabling flexible arrangements. Roaring synths, a dynamic Hammond organ, and sharp drumming instantly draw the listener into the album’s world. The opening track, “Hole in the Sky Pt. 1”—which feels like a late-’70s SBB-style arrangement of “Tarkus” and “ Hoedown," arranged in the style of late-’70s SBB, made a powerful first impression on listeners. But just when you think that’s it, the next track, " Through The Looking Glass" suddenly shifts to a ballad dominated by saccharine vocals, and the track after that, "Lar-Asia," features heavily distorted guitars clearly influenced by Robert Fripp—as the title suggests, it instantly transforms into heavy prog with riffs reminiscent of "Larks’ Tongues~" -style riffs—a sudden shift into heavy prog. While this lack of consistency in structure is a slight drawback, the album more than makes up for it with its superb attention to detail in capturing the essence of ’70s British prog. It’s a legendary gem left behind by the ’80s American prog scene!
