Born out of the local scene in Toronto, Canada, this ultra-minor progressive/symphonic rock band—ANOTHERROADSIDEATTRACT—is virtually unknown except for the fact that it once featured four members: David Saunders (vocals), Armin Leonardo (keyboards), David Dobko (keyboards), and Michael Grace (drums/percussion)—other than that, almost nothing is known about this ultra-obscure progressive/symphonic rock band: ANOTHER ROADSIDE ATTRACTION’s sole self-released album from ’79 is finally being released on CD for the first time in ’26 by Paisley Press in Germany! With a somewhat unusual lineup for a rock band of that era—guitar-less and featuring twin keyboards—the music blends a variety of styles ranging from pop to progressive rock, jazz, fusion, and AOR—all thrown together beneath easy-listening-style arrangements. Whether this was the result of the band pouring every idea they’d accumulated into the album or a sign of uncertainty about their direction remains unclear, but the eclectic sound exudes the ambition typical of a debut album. The opening track, “Serenade for the Sun,” which creates a stark contrast between radio-friendly, catchy vocal parts and technical instrumental sections that sound as if ELP were aiming to be Return to Forever, is the quintessential eclectic track that symbolizes this album. Following that, the album features a lineup of tracks sure to please prog and symphonic rock fans, led by the excellent “The Maze”—a genuine symphonic rock masterpiece where rhythmic acoustic piano and harmonically rich synths, reminiscent of a blend of YES and Canterbury music, create a dramatic flow. This is a particularly distinctive work within the realm of 1970s Canadian progressive rock, bearing a resemblance to independent North American prog bands of the same era!
