Description:
Danzi’s Flute Concerto: A Composer Who Deeply Admired Mozart Includes a World-First Recording of an Overture to Commemorate the 250th Anniversary of His Birth Franz Danzi was an Italian-German composer active during the same era as Beethoven. 2013 marks the 250th anniversary of his birth. Active at the courts of Mannheim, Munich, Stuttgart, and Karlsruhe, he composed operas, sacred music, symphonies, concertos, and chamber music; in particular, his woodwind quintets remain an essential part of the repertoire for woodwind players to this day. This recording features two flute concertos and three overtures, all making their world premiere recordings. The flute concertos are striking for their beautiful, endearing melodies, which reveal the influence of Mozart, whom Danzí deeply admired. Annie Lafram’s fluid and masterful traverso playing is particularly captivating. Furthermore, Danzí composed overtures at pivotal moments in his career, and the three works included here reflect the evolution of his compositional style. Orchestre Le Phénix was founded in 2008 by two cellists, Christine Meyer and Matthias Kleibemmel. All members have trained in both modern and period performance practices, demonstrating a wide-ranging musicality. King International
