Description:

André, the “King of Publishing” from Offenbach, the center of 18th-century German music publishing. This album features the innovative “Grand Symphony” by Johann Anton André—a publisher and composer who collected numerous autograph scores by Mozart—as well as Viotti’s “Violin Concerto No. 16,” in the version revised by Mozart and owned by André. Johann Anton André (1774–1842) was a prominent publisher and composer in Offenbach, Germany, known for purchasing over 270 autograph scores from Mozart’s widow, Constanze. He owned autograph scores of works such as *Don Giovanni* and *The Magic Flute*, and was among the first to advocate for the importance of “authenticity” after the composer’s death, publishing scores based on the original manuscripts. This album presents an intriguing program combining works from André’s collection with his own lesser-known masterpieces. Following Mozart’s *Don Giovanni* Overture is Viotti’s *Violin Concerto No. 16*, a work that marked Viotti’s breakthrough into his mature period as one of the leading virtuosos of his time; here, it is performed in the version (KV 470a) to which Mozart added two trumpets and timpani. The autograph score of this expanded version was also one of the treasures of the André family’s collection. The centerpiece of the album is André’s own *Grand Symphony in E-flat Major*, Op. 25. Composed around the same time as Beethoven’s “Eroica,” it features a large brass section including four horns and a tenor trombone—an extremely innovative instrumentation for its time. Furthermore, he has gone down in music history as one of the first composers to adopt “rehearsal marks (using the alphabet)” in the parts for this work. The violin solo will be performed by Maximilian Junghans, who served as second concertmaster of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra for six years and has been principal second violinist since 2024. The concert will be conducted by Douglas Bostock, a veteran musician who has served as chief conductor and artistic director of the Southwest German Chamber Orchestra since 2019. Bostock, who is also well-known as the former Music Director of the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Osaka Shion Wind Orchestra, will lead the Offenbach Capitol Symphony Orchestra in an ambitious performance that sheds light on the historical context.
