Andreas Leitze Conducts *The Coronation of Poppea* World Premiere Recording of the Complete Naples Version! Andreas Leitze, the new cantor at St. Thomas Church, is attracting widespread attention! Monteverdi’s late masterpiece, *The Coronation of Poppea*. The world’s first recording of the complete Naples version! Since September 2021, he has served as cantor (Thomaskantor/ music director) at the historic St. Thomas Church in Leipzig. He has attracted significant attention as a cantor of a new era, not least because he is a Swiss Catholic (whereas previous St. Thomas cantors were Protestant Germans). Reitze, who bears the heavy responsibility and great tradition of being the 18th Thomaskantor since J.S. Bach, has recorded Monteverdi’s late masterpiece *The Coronation of Poppea*, a monumental work! No original autograph score of *The Coronation of Poppea* survives; the work is known only through two manuscript copies—the so-called “Venetian manuscript” and the “Neapolitan manuscript” (both of unknown authorship and containing only the vocal parts and basso continuo). While recordings of the Naples version have been made in the past—such as by La Venexiana—some sections were omitted; here, however, a valuable recording has been realized, billed as the “first complete recording of the Naples version from 1651.” The Naples and Venice manuscripts differ in many aspects of both the music and the text, allowing listeners to experience the story of Poppea and Nerone (Emperor Nero) in a fresh and exciting way. It was recorded in the summer of 2021 as part of a production by “Opera at the Baroque Castle Waldegg,” under the musical direction of Andreas Leitze. Tokyo M Plus
