Mieczysław Weinberg (1919–1996) is known as a close friend of Shostakovich, and his outstanding body of work is being reevaluated one piece after another. Although he fled from Poland to the Soviet Union to escape the ravages of World War II, Weinberg led a life of hardship—including imprisonment during anti-Jewish campaigns—and many of his works are related to the war. His Symphony No. 6, a work related to the Holocaust, was highly praised by Shostakovich. The beautiful yet poignant boys’ choir is particularly striking. Tokyo M-Plus
