A collection of Beethoven’s rare repertoire, including a piano version of his Violin Concerto! This album, featuring Howard Griffiths and the Brandenburg State Orchestra Frankfurt, brings together a selection of Beethoven’s relatively obscure works. Of particular note is the “Piano Concerto in D Major, Op. 61a,” featuring Claire Funch as soloist. The original work is the well-known Violin Concerto, which Beethoven himself arranged into a piano concerto—his “Sixth Piano Concerto”—at the suggestion of Clementi. A cadenza—which was not included in the original violin concerto—has been added here; in particular, the first movement features a grand cadenza accompanied by timpani. While this cadenza is often adapted for the violin concerto, recordings of it in the piano concerto version are relatively rare, making this a valuable release. “Music for a Knight’s Ballet” is a collection of short pieces, each about one minute long, written by Beethoven when he was around 20 years old; it consists of a series of cheerful compositions. The album concludes with “Wellington’s Victory.” Also known as the “War Symphony,” this work was inspired by the Battle of Vitoria, where the British army defeated the French, and boasts the largest orchestration of any orchestral work Beethoven ever composed. Claire Huanti is a pianist born in New York to Chinese parents. Although she began studying piano relatively late, at the age of 7, she immediately demonstrated her talent, making her Carnegie Hall debut as early as age 9 and performing at the White House at age 10, where she garnered attention as a child prodigy. She studied at the Curtis Institute of Music under Eleanor Sokolov and Gary Graffman. At the age of 16, she participated in the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition—an event she describes as a turning point in her life—where she met Arie Vardi; the following year, she enrolled at the University of Music and Drama in Hanover to study under Vardi. In 2011, he became the youngest contestant ever to compete in the ARD International Music Competition in Munich, where he won second place; in 2018, he took first place at the Géza Anda Competition, and he has achieved strong results in numerous other competitions as well. Currently, while serving as Mr. Vardi’s assistant, she is actively performing in concerts and recording, primarily in Germany and the United States. Tokyo M-Plus
