Mahler: Symphony No. 5 Kemp & Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra Although this is a monaural recording from 1948—shortly after the war—it was made for broadcast, so while the sound quality is surprisingly good for its age, there are occasional instances of noise and surface noise attributable to the original master. Furthermore, perhaps because Mahler performances were rare in Germany at the time, Kempe uses a version here in which Gerhard Wiesenhütter made cuts and other alterations to the third movement. Wiesenhütter was a German conductor born in Dresden in 1912. Since he was serving as music director of the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra at the time, it is believed that Kempe performed using the orchestra’s own score. For a long time, Kempe’s only known Mahler recording was *Songs of a Wayfarer*, in which he accompanied Fischer-Dieskau in 1955; however, but his “aptitude” for the composer became widely recognized overnight thanks to the magnificent performances of Symphony No. 1, “Titan” (recorded in 1965) and Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection” (recorded in 1972), released by BBC Legends in 1999. Come to think of it, Kempe was also a master of Richard Strauss, and since he frequently performed a wide range of modern repertoire in concert, it was almost surprising that he had no Mahler recordings; consequently, expectations for subsequent releases were very high. However, it was a pity that the 2003 release of *Das Lied von der Erde* lacked clarity, perhaps because it used private recordings.
