Schuricht in New York In 1956, a year marked by celebrations of the 200th anniversary of Mozart’s birth, the Vienna Philharmonic embarked on a U.S. tour at the end of the year; however, the originally scheduled conductor, Erich Kleiber [1890–1956] passed away suddenly on January 27—which also happens to be Mozart’s birthday—so Karl Schuricht [1880–1967], with whom the orchestra enjoyed an exceptionally close relationship at the time, stepped in as his replacement. It was quite a luxury to have André Cluytens as the assistant conductor, and the program was truly magnificent, with a total of 12 concerts held. This release features a live recording of the concert held in New York for “Human Rights Day,” set against the unique backdrop of the United Nations General Assembly Hall. The performance by the perfectly matched duo of Schuricht and the Vienna Philharmonic is quite excellent; amidst the electrifying atmosphere, the bold interpretive touches evident throughout allow us to experience the unique charm of Schuricht in a live setting. Incidentally, thanks to the success of this tour, Schuricht made guest appearances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Symphony Orchestra the following year.
