Haydn: *The Creation* A live recording of Haydn’s oratorio *The Creation*, performed at the cathedral in Merseburg, a town near Leipzig. The conductor, Michael Schönheit, is an organist born in Saalfeld who studied in Leipzig. While serving as organist at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig since 1986, he has also been actively conducting from his base in Merseburg. Despite being a performance in a regional city, this rendition of *The Creation* is of a very high standard. The Merzeburg Hofmusik, founded in 1998, is an orchestra that uses period instruments and includes members of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. Schönheit’s conducting combines the transparency that comes from using period instruments with the gentle warmth characteristic of the Leipzig tradition. Moreover, the orchestra and choir—which he has led for many years—follow Schönheit’s musical vision perfectly, creating an intimate delight that cannot be found in symphonic performances of Haydn. The three soloists—a young soprano, a mid-career tenor, and a veteran baritone—are perfectly cast, and this, too, is a resounding success.
