A Rustic Charm! Veteran period instrument performer Anne Schumann’s Biber: “Rosary Sonatas,” Book 2 Book 2 of Biber’s masterpiece, the “Rosary Sonatas” (Rosenkranz Sonatas). This is the crowning achievement of Biber, a great 17th-century violinist and composer. It is a monumental work consisting of 15 sonatas representing prayers to the Virgin Mary, along with an unaccompanied “Passacaglia.” These pieces are technically demanding, requiring the use of “scordatura,” a technique in which the instrument is tuned differently from standard tuning. Volume 2 is titled “The Passion.” At the beginning of this *Rosary Sonatas*, the sound of the bells from the church in Kaltenlengsfeld, Germany—where the organ used for the recording is located—resounds. Violinist Anne Schumann studied in Weimar and Dresden and began her career in 1989 as a violinist with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. She later transitioned to playing period instruments and has been active with ensembles such as the English Baroque Soloists and the Kur-Sächsische Kapelle Leipzig.
