The vihuela is a plucked string instrument of the guitar family that was widely used during the Renaissance on the Iberian Peninsula and in Spanish-speaking regions; if one were to describe it, it has a tone and function that fall somewhere between those of a lute and a guitar. The instrument’s origins date back to the Middle Ages, and there were two types: one played with a bow and one played with the fingers; it is said that the bowed variety later evolved into the viola. This CD features the finger-played type—that is, what is known today as the “vihuela.” In the Spanish-speaking world, compositions for this instrument flourished particularly in the 16th century, but as Spain’s power waned in the 17th century, it was supplanted by the guitar and eventually disappeared. Only a handful of viuelas from that era survive today, and the one used on this disc was crafted in 2012. Yasunori Imamura, a world-renowned guitar and lute player whom Japan is proud to call its own, has created an entire album featuring this viuela—an instrument that, while resembling a lute, possesses a somewhat melancholic and deep resonance and is now a rarity worldwide. A specialist who is a regular on the early music labels of Deutsche Grammophon (Archiv), Harmonia Mundi, Sony, and Virgin Classics presents this long-awaited solo vihuela album.
