Jürg Herchett is a composer from East Germany who studied under Paul Dessau. Although the East German government restricted the performance of contemporary music during the East German era, he has maintained a prolific career ever since gaining attention at the Donaueschingen Music Festival in the 1980s, following the easing of restrictions and the fall of the Berlin Wall. He is also known for titling his works only as “Composition” or “Cantata.” His four “Compositions” for organ have the character of organ-computer music, as if further developing Ligeti’s organ works. All of his works are lengthy; this “Composition I” lasts 43 minutes and occupies a single track on the CD. The composer has also visited Japan at the invitation of the JML Yoshiro Irino Music Research Institute. Tobu Land System
