Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of His Birth! Mendelssohn Anthology, Volume 8 “The Soldier’s Love” (A Musical Comedy in One Act) This year marks the 200th anniversary of Mendelssohn’s birth. To commemorate this occasion, the QUERSTAND label—based near Leipzig, a city closely associated with Mendelssohn—has decided to release the “Mendelssohn Anthology,” a 10-volume series. While some tracks—such as readings of letters and biographical texts—may be a bit dry, this promises to be a valuable anthology offering the chance to hear rare works by Mendelssohn and his contemporaries. “The Soldier’s Love” is a Singspiel (a musical play with dialogue) that Mendelssohn composed as a Christmas gift for his parents when he was 11 years old. The story is set around the time Napoleon’s army occupied Spain. A French colonel named Félix falls in love with a Spanish countess, and around the same time, one of the colonel’s soldiers, Victor, begins an affair with the countess’s maid, Zerbine. Due to the political situation, both couples keep their relationships secret, but Victor, the soldier, devises a plan to make his romance with Zerbine a reality. So, what will the ending be…? Please fully enjoy the talent of the young Mendelssohn, who began to show his genius as a great composer while still in his teens.
