For Mehta, this was his third live performance with the Bavarian State Orchestra—following those with the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1978) and the Israel Philharmonic (1992)—and it is a masterful performance that can be considered the culmination of this partnership, so much so that Mehta himself has described it as “the best recording I’ve ever made.” Each member performed with great enthusiasm; in particular, the timpani of the virtuoso Raymond Kauffs resounded triumphantly in the finale, leaving a truly unforgettable impression. He also recorded Symphony No. 5 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic (1976) and the New York Philharmonic (1989)—both legendary performances that captured the energy of their respective eras. On this disc, he once again captivates listeners with his characteristic structural mastery and highly refined expressiveness. These two recordings have previously been released on CD and SACD, both of which were highly acclaimed for their rich sound quality.
