He has a special affinity for Bruckner, having released recordings of Symphony No. 3 (out of print) and Symphony No. 6 (HMA.1951901) with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra on the French label Harmonia Mundi, both of which were highly acclaimed. Furthermore, his recordings of the Symphony No. 4 and No. 7 with his regular ensemble, the Bavarian State Orchestra, were released by SONYCLASSICAL, portraying Bruckner’s refined and majestic musical world with astonishing vividness. Now being released is the Symphony No. 8, recorded by FARAO CLASSICS producer Felix Gagerle and making its debut release. Recorded by FARAO, renowned for its high sound quality, this is a rich studio recording with meticulous attention to detail. Symphony No. 8 is Bruckner’s final completed symphony; with its unique musical language and a structure that is both expansive and tightly woven, it is often hailed as his masterpiece. Like his other symphonies, numerous versions of this work exist; for this recording, Kent Nagano uses the 1887 first draft, which was originally deemed “unplayable” at the time of its composition. As is well known, Bruckner was deeply influenced by Wagner, and and with the Bavarian State Orchestra—which has delivered many legendary performances of Wagner’s works alongside numerous maestros—combined with their deeply resonant, rich sound that epitomizes Bruckner, and Kent Nagano’s unparalleled, masterful structural vision, this performance stands as the definitive recording of the First Draft.
