He has a special affinity for Bruckner, and his recordings of Symphony No. 3 (now out of print) and Symphony No. 6 (HMA.1951901) with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, released by the French label Harmonia Mundi, were both highly acclaimed. Furthermore, his recordings of the Symphony No. 4 and No. 7 with his regular ensemble, the Bavarian State Orchestra, were released by SONYCLASSICAL, portraying Bruckner’s sophisticated and magnificent musical world with astonishing vividness. This new release is a 4-CD box set from FARAO CLASSICS, comprising Symphony No. 4 and No. 7—originally released by SONY CLASSICAL—along with Symphony No. 8. Recorded by FARAO, renowned for its high sound quality, these sessions were meticulously crafted with attention to every detail. The recording of Symphony No. 7, made at Ghent Cathedral in Belgium, features the beautiful reverberation and natural atmosphere unique to a church, making it truly exquisite. Symphony No. 8, making its debut on this release, is Bruckner’s final completed symphony; with its unique musical language and a structure that is both expansive and tightly woven, it is often hailed as his greatest masterpiece. Like his other symphonies, this work exists in numerous versions; for this recording, Kent Nagano uses the 1887 first draft, which was deemed “unplayable” at the time of its composition. As is well known, Bruckner was deeply influenced by Wagner, and with the Bavarian State Orchestra—which has delivered many legendary performances of Wagner’s works alongside numerous masters—combining their profoundly rich, full-bodied sound, quintessentially Bruckner, with Kent Nagano’s unparalleled and masterful structural vision, this performance stands as the definitive recording of the first draft.
