The solo parts are packed with virtuosic elements! The Thuringian Bach Collegium has recorded Locatelli’s theatrical overture and concerto! Pietro Locatelli was a late Baroque Italian violinist and composer known by the nickname “The Violin Breaker.” Born in Bergamo, he studied in Rome before settling and working in Amsterdam. While Locatelli is best known for his collection *The Art of Violin Playing*, Op. 3—a set of pieces requiring virtuosic technique said to have greatly influenced the later Paganini—his Op. 4, *Six Theatrical Overtures and Concertos*, is a collection consisting of pieces resembling overtures for theatrical works and concertos for orchestra. Although these are string ensemble pieces rather than solo concertos, the solo parts are brimming with the technical virtuosity characteristic of Locatelli. This collection stands apart from the overtures, symphonies, and concertos for orchestra by other composers, showcasing Locatelli’s unique style. The Thuringian Bach Collegium, which performs this program, is a period-instrument ensemble founded in 2018 by veteran violinist Gernot Jussmuth, who previously served as concertmaster of the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Staatskapelle Weimar. True to its name, the ensemble focuses primarily on Bach’s works, with technically demanding pieces from the surrounding repertoire forming the core of its repertoire. Here, they deliver a razor-sharp performance of Locatelli’s technically demanding ensemble works in a chamber-music setting, offering a thrilling listening experience that showcases the overwhelming virtuosity of Jusmuth and the other musicians.
