An album highlighting three composers with the name Antonio who were active in Venice at the same time: Vivaldi, Lotti, and Caldara. The album features cantatas and ensembles for alto with the famous countertenor Alex Potter. The main piece is Vivaldi's famous psalm piece "Nisi dominus (If the Lord would build a house)" RV.608, a masterpiece full of beautiful melodies. Vivaldi's two concertos for strings are also arranged like overtures to other works. Lotti, who was music director at St. Mark's Basilica in his later years, is best known for his poignant religious choral work "Crucified," but here we hear a rare work (world premiere recording), a religious work for solo alto voice. Caldara, who was active as a choir member and instrumentalist at St. Mark's Basilica in his 20s and later moved to Mantova, Rome, and Vienna, is known for composing many operas, but he also left many oratorios as well. Here are some of his oratorios and religious dramas. Here are three instrumental ensembles from oratorios and religious dramatic works, and their dramatic style, which skillfully employs the fugue style, demonstrates Caldara's great compositional ability as an instrumental composer. Also to be heard is the beautiful "Ave Regina Celorum" composed for the court of the Holy Roman Emperor in Vienna. Alex Potter, a talented countertenor trusted by conductors such as Herreweghe, Rademann, and Savard, specializes in religious music. The expressive ensemble of La Festa Musicale, a German period-instrument orchestra that continues to release valuable recordings on the audite label with a wide variety of guests, is also excellent.
