The Thuringian Bach Collegium, whose album featuring violin concertos by Prince Johann Ernst II (AU97769) has received high praise. This highly anticipated second release is an album featuring all four orchestral suites by Johann Bernhard Bach, Johann Sebastian Bach’s first cousin. Johann Bernhard was born in Erfurt in 1676 and received his first musical instruction from his father, who was also a musician. In 1695, he became an organist in his hometown; he subsequently served as an organist in Magdeburg and Eisenach, as well as a court musician for the Duke of Saxe-Eisenach, and died in Eisenach in 1749. As a composer, he focused primarily on organ works, but most of these have been lost; these four orchestral suites are representative of his surviving works. It is known that special parts were prepared exclusively for the great J.S. Bach during performances of these works. The Thuringian Bach Collegium recorded these works in Eisenach, where J.B. Bach spent his final years. Not only is the performance superb, but it is also noteworthy that the recording was produced by Mr. Ludger Beckendorf, owner of the audite label and sound engineer.
