A Collection of Organ and Vocal Works Composed During the Golden Age of Organ Music in Iberia The latest album by Martin Noi, the master organist for the AUDITE label, is a collection of organ and vocal works composed during the golden age of organ music in Iberia (Spain). The golden age of the organ in Spain began during the reign of Charles I (1516–1556) and reached its artistic and cultural peak thanks to political patronage. This disc features works by Haraba, Coelho, and Araujo, who were active during that period. The “tiento”—a form that these composers are said to have established—is a highly ornate style that vividly conveys the flourishing artistic climate of the era. (The tiento is a form characterized by the use of distinct stops in the high and low registers on the same keyboard, as well as the frequent use of dissonances; it is a feature found in Spanish organ works from the mid-16th century onward.) The performer, Martin Neuhaus, is a prize winner of the J.S. Bach International Competition. With his exceptionally refined and outstanding articulation, as well as his precise registrations tailored to both the music and the organ he plays, he is one of today’s leading organists. As of 2015, he serves as the resident organist at St. Elizabeth’s Church, St. Peter’s Church, and St. Paul’s Church in Reutlingen. His acclaimed series featuring Bach and German composers—“J.S. Bach and the North German Tradition” (AU92547) and “J.S. Bach and the South German Tradition” (AU92548)—have been highly praised both in Germany and abroad.
