Renowned German violinist Franziska Peach has taken on the challenge of recording Grieg’s complete violin sonatas. While Grieg’s Third Sonata is exceptionally well-known, the First and Second Sonatas have been increasingly reevaluated in recent years and are being performed more frequently. The No. 1 Sonata was composed in 1865 while Grieg was living in Ronsdal, Denmark, and premiered in Leipzig that same November. The No. 2 Sonata, composed in 1867, was dedicated to the Norwegian composer Johan Svendsen. Born in East Germany, Franziska Peich is a prodigy who began learning the violin from her father at the age of five and made her debut in Berlin at the age of 11. She later studied under Dorothy Delay at the Juilliard School in New York. She also studied under Ruggero Ricci to refine her individuality as a violinist. While pursuing a solo career, Peich served as first concertmaster of the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra from 1998 to 2002 and has been active in a wide range of fields; in recent years, however, she has been actively engaged in chamber music. As a founding member of the Trio Testore, she has performed major piano trio works, and the complete Brahms Piano Trios (AU91668), released on the AUDITE label, has received high acclaim. In this Grieg recording as well, Peach’s lustrous and resolute violin tone is a highlight, and his chemistry with pianist Aisinger is impeccable. King International
