The latest release in audite’s ambitious series: Eduard Frank’s String Quintet SACD A new release in audite’s series dedicated to the rediscovery of Eduard Frank (1817–1893). The two string quintets, each featuring two violins, two violas, and a cello, are believed to have been composed around 1845 and 1870, respectively, and The background to their creation lies in the rapid development of the lifestyle of the emerging bourgeoisie at the time, which led to a growing demand for high-quality works to be performed for them. In music history, Eduard Frank’s contribution lies in his role as a “bridge between generations of great composers”—linking Schumann and Mendelssohn on the one hand, and Schumann with Bruch, Brahms, and Bruckner on the other. In terms of his works, many of his chamber music pieces—which make up the majority of his output aside from his piano works—are of great significance; to date, audite has released his String Sextet, Piano Quintet, String Quartet, Piano Trio, Violin Sonata, and Cello Sonata. Indeed, here too, his concise, unforgettable melodies and inventive themes—combined with large-scale, dramatic structures—are remarkable, as is his outstanding mastery of counterpoint, which is more than enough to satisfy both professionals and enthusiasts alike. In his noble and stirring inspiration, tinged with a touch of melancholy, one can even detect elements that seem to anticipate Brahms’s style in several respects; the finale of Op. 51, structured as ten variations on a theme, is unquestionably a masterpiece. As usual, these two pieces had also been completely forgotten for a century after the composer’s death, but their content once again demonstrates that Eduard Frank was one of the composers who displayed the most original German musical language in chamber music. For this recording, a rock-solid lineup of German musicians has been assembled, led by Edinger—a familiar face in this series—along with Kimmstedt, a student of Schwabe, and Heiberg, former concertmaster of the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg.
