Description:

The Amadeus Quartet's fourth collection of first recordings is the Amadeus Quartet's first collection of RIAS recordings released on the German audite label, which has gained a reputation for its high-quality sound reissues of Hungarian and British modernism. The fourth volume, entitled "Modernism," includes works by Britten, Tippett, Purcell, Scheibel, and Bartók. Purcell is a composer from the Baroque period, but is included in connection with Britten's works. Although the Amadeus Quartet has specialized in Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, the standard string quartet repertoire, the quartet has also been active in performing works by composers of the same period and commissioned works. Britten's String Quartet No. 2, composed in 1945 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Purcell's death, consists of three parts, Allegro, Vivace, and Chaconne (Chaconie), and is a lively work with a Purcell-like atmosphere.London-born Michael Tippett, a composer and conductor who often worked with the Amadeus String Quartet, is known for his active engagement with Purcell's works, which were not as well known as they are today, and for developing the choir founded by Holst into one of the finest in England. He was born in Hungary and settled in England. This series of RIAS recordings dates from the 1950s and is full of the ambitious and fresh interpretations of the Amadeus Quartet, which was founded in 1948. The quartet's charm, its graceful playing, is evident from its earliest days. The quartet's performance is not only excellent, but the audite label's superb reissue is also noteworthy, bringing the music back to life in mono but in very clear sound quality. The RIAS recordings were made in one take with no editing of any of the movements, so although they are session recordings, the performances are as spirited as a live performance.
