The mythological oratorio "The Choice of Hercules" (1751) powerfully depicts Hercules, wavering between virtue and easy pleasures, but taking the right path in life by choosing hardship. Dettingen Te Deum" (1743) is a cantata commissioned for the celebration of the victory of the Anglo-Austrian allied forces over the French at the Battle of Dettingen in the War of the Austrian Succession. Timpani and trumpet are used in the cantata, and the victory is sung with great pomp and circumstance. Lawrence Cummings is a conductor and chamber musician who has been the Music Director of the London Handel Festival since 1999 and the Music Director of the International Handel Festival in Göttingen since 2012.
