A Specialist in Church Music Recognized by Bruckner Himself Listen to Aumann, a Composer Associated with St. Florian Abbey Franz Joseph Aumann received his musical education in Vienna as a member of the choir alongside Michael Haydn and Albrechtsberger. He entered St. Florian Abbey at the age of 25, took over the choir just two years later, and went on to conduct church music there for more than 40 years. His church music was performed at St. Florian Abbey until the 19th century, and Bruckner—who served as the abbey’s organist for seven years—also held his works in high regard. The “Mass in C Major” is a “Missa Solemnis” featuring a grand orchestration with oboes, trumpets, and timpani, and a performance time exceeding 40 minutes; it is believed to have been composed for a special holiday. Alongside virtuosic and brilliant passages, listeners can savor a unique musical flow that breathes with the spirit of the region’s folk music. Cassation’s “La Pastorale” is an idyllic work for four string instruments and natural horn, which was performed at Schlegel Abbey on Christmas Day in 1777. Gunnar Letzbor, who continues to bring us exquisite music from St. Florian Abbey, presents another release well worth noting. ACCENT
