Wilms, whose work is undergoing a revival, with the first recordings of his concertos Serene yet ingenious, with a rich and delightful orchestral sound In recent years, the symphonies and chamber music of the German-Dutch composer Johann Wilhelm Wilms have gradually begun to be performed. This album features the first-ever recordings of three of his concertos: the Clarinet Concerto (c. 1815) and two Concerto-Symphonies (both from 1814). The performance features a notable collaboration between Andreas Spelling—a master musician who began his career as a harpsichordist with Musica Antiqua Köln and has since been active as a conductor of early music ensembles—and Harmonie Universelle, a group known for releasing albums with cleverly worded titles on the ACCENT label. Wilms was born in a village near Cologne and moved to Amsterdam at the age of 19. There, he made a name for himself as a virtuoso flutist and pianist, and also established himself as a composer whose published works were highly acclaimed both in the Netherlands and abroad. It is said that he deeply admired the works of Haydn, Mozart, and early Beethoven, and one can sense this influence in his wonderful music, where melody and harmony intertwine at a high level. In terms of instrumentation, it features a solid two-part structure in the style of early Beethoven, while musically, it possesses a narrative style characterized by the joy and beautiful balance inherited from Haydn. The solo parts, too, feature an idyllic and serene musical character rather than one that emphasizes technical virtuosity. The charm of this concerto-symphony, in which a variety of warm-sounding timbres skillfully pass the musical baton back and forth, is truly remarkable.
