Mozart Concertos: The Fruition of Schondervilt’s Research Arthur Schondervilt, an intellectual fortepiano performer hailing from the Netherlands—a powerhouse of early music. His collection of Beethoven piano concertos, which caused a sensation with its “one performer per part” arrangement, as well as this Mozart piano concerto collection and an album featuring Mozart’s complete piano sonatas performed on three different period instruments—his innovative and stimulating performances, grounded in historical research, never fail to captivate listeners. Mozart composed four concertos in succession between 1776 and 1777 during his Salzburg period. As this was a time when he was deeply influenced by the Gallant style, graceful melodies appear throughout. In his Sixth Concerto, he wrote his first work to span more than five octaves, requiring a larger instrument than usual. Furthermore, while the cadenzas are among the highlights of Mozart’s concertos, Schondervilt has included two of them on this recording. Concerto No. 8 was commissioned by Countess Lützow and is a work brimming with vitality and beauty. Schondelvilt uses a replica of a Späth & Schmeel fortepiano from around 1770, the era in which the piece was composed. It is characterized by a delicate and elegant tone.
