Biber’s Vesper and Kerl’s Mass A masterful performance by Cantus Köln and Concerto Palatino! Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, a composer from Bohemia who was also one of the greatest violinists of his time. He created a unique sound through the use of scordatura (alternate tuning), as heard in his masterpiece, the “Rosary Sonatas.” Alongside his instrumental works, Bieber’s religious compositions are highly sought after. While many of his pieces are grand and large-scale, the “Evening Prayer of the Blessed Virgin Mary” included here is a beautiful work that retains Bieber’s distinctive splendor while exuding a sense of religious tranquility. Conrad Jungheinel, director of Cantus Köln, selected five psalms and the Magnificat from this collection and combined them with Kerl’s Hymnal (Op. 1), resulting in a performance rich in diverse expression. The album also features a Mass by Johann Caspar Kerl, a contemporary of Biber who was active during the height of the German Baroque era but whose works are rarely performed today. This piece was composed as a lament in response to the famine and plague brought on by the Turkish siege of Vienna. Kerl possessed highly sophisticated compositional techniques and influenced composers such as Bach, Handel, and Pachelbel; in this Mass as well, he demonstrates his extraordinary talent through innovative chromatic progressions and key changes. You can fully appreciate the masterful artistry of the Concerto Palatino ensemble, featuring an 8-part Cantus Cornu and an ensemble of cornets and Baroque trombones. King International
