The virtuoso group Il Gardellino portrays Janicz's chamber sonatas that graced the court of Friedrich the Great. This is a collection of chamber sonatas by Johann Gottlieb Janichu (1708-1763), a composer born in Schweiznitz (=Silesia, the region from present-day southwestern Poland to northeastern Czech Republic). Janicz became a member of Crown Prince Friedrich's (later Frederick the Great) private orchestra in 1736, then moved to Rheinsberg where he started the famous "Friday Academy. He spent the rest of his life in Berlin. Janitsch, along with C.P.E. Bach, Kwanz, and several other musicians, was commissioned to compose for court balls and other occasions, and was highly acclaimed at the time and supported by many celebrities. The chamber sonatas here are also rich in accomplished technique and musicality, and the melodies have an interesting and unique atmosphere.The performance is by Il Gardellino, Belgium's leading ancient music ensemble.
