A new recording has been released in the exquisite series of Wagner transcriptions by Mahler’s close friend Hermann Bohn! Following *Tristan und Isolde* and *Der Ring des Nibelungen*, *Parsifal* is now available for two pianos! From the Musicaphon label’s most successful series comes the long-awaited new release: Wagner’s *Parsifal*, arranged for two pianos by Hermann Bohn (1859–1927)! A close friend of Mahler’s, Bän was a German musician who studied composition under Bruckner and Rheinberger. By around 1883, he had largely ceased writing original compositions, instead devoting himself to arranging works by other composers—particularly pioneering new ground with his transcriptions of symphonic works for two pianos. Behn’s *50 Symphonic Movements from the Music Dramas of Richard Wagner*, a project he began in 1914, is one of the largest transcription projects in history. This label has previously released the two-piano versions of *Tristan und Isolde* and *The Ring of the Nibelung*, and has garnered significant attention, including for *Mahler: Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection”*, which was praised by Mahler himself. This *Parsifal* is also interspersed with Behn’s virtuosic arrangements, which demand extremely high technical skill from the performers. By making full use of the pedals and meticulously incorporating the roles of each orchestral instrument and vocal part, then skillfully distributing them across the two pianos, he creates a symphonic sound world of Wagner’s that goes far beyond mere simplification. Pianist Christiane Behn, a descendant of Hermann Behn, will perform alongside her student, Emilian Ramniceanu. Behn and Ramniceanu previously appeared at the annual Mahler Festival held on the shores of Lake Attersee—a site associated with Mahler—in 2021, where their two-piano performance of Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” was met with great acclaim.
